Many of us have the desire to write, have our writing published, sold, read and appreciated by millions earning us a nice income in the process. Very few ever realize their dream for a number of reasons. 

Frequently we start off with high enthusiasm to conquer the literary world but with our first rejection slip our creative get up and go, gets up and leaves. It doesn’t have to be this way. You can write, produce and sell your writing to people all over the planet and get well paid for your efforts. You don’t need a professional editor or book publisher to tell you your material isn’t good enough to publish.

We seem to have the idea that unless our writing receives the approval of magazine editors or publishers, it isn’t worth reading and we aren’t really writers. I think that if I write, I am a writer. If I can find an audience for my work and am able to sell it to that audience I am a professional writer. Your audience will be your judge.

If you have a message people want to hear or an idea that will meet a need or solve a problem you have a receptive audience out there just waiting to buy your writing. Now, with the internet, you can reach huge numbers of potential buyers if you know how to go about it.

How to get started?

GIVE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT

You can only hope to be successful selling your writing if you write about what people want to read. The most important rule for you to keep in mind is, Give the people what they want. If you don’t take this into consideration you will be writing for yourself, and that won’t sell. You must write with the wants of the reader in mind. What is the reader looking for?

This doesn’t necessarily mean that you don’t write to share your passion and interests with the world. It just means that you must seek to package and present your passions and interests in a way that meets the wants of your niche market. This is called looking for the angle or hook.

If you are interested in fishing you write about fishing. If rug hooking is your passion then write about rug hooking. Identify your topic, become an expert in it, try to determine who your niche or target market is and what they are looking for, share your expertise in print, present it to your identified niche market and watch good things begin to happen.

When I say write about your interests I mean more than just telling the world about fishing or rug hooking. You have to identify a specific want people who fish have and try to satisfy that want. “How to” writing is in great demand so put your title in the form of a “How To” statement. HOW TO CATCH A BIG ONE WITH EVERY CAST is a good example. Even if it is a gross exaggeration it does illustrate the point I am trying to make. Solve a problem or provide a tip which will definitely improve their fishing skills and you will have people wanting to buy your booklet, manual or report.

RESEARCH EXISTING NEEDS AND INTERESTS.

It is much more effective to identify an existing want and write to meet that want than to write what you think people want to read. Research online and off to come up with a want people have. Let’s stay with fishing for awhile. If I were to write about fishing I would read fishing magazines and visit fishing websites. See what people are interested in. Letters to the editor in a magazine give you a good idea of the interests and questions readers in that field have.

Take a look at the classified ads in magazines to see what they are selling and how they present their offer to the readers. Check on back issues of magazines such as Mother Earth News to see what ads are there month after month. These are the ads that are making money. They have to be making money to be able to afford having their ad published repeatedly in Mother Earth. Send for a few of the free information packages offered in these ads. When they arrive study them carefully. You just might find something that sparks your own creativity. Notice the topics and the prices.
 

If you really want to write but don’t have an interest in anything specific here is how to get ideas for writing projects which will have a great chance to sell and possibly make you a lot of money.

to learn a new skill

Take a good look at this list. If these are the things people want from life then identify one or two that interest you, research the topic thoroughly and write a 5 to 15 page “ how to” report and bring it to market. This is the best way to begin. Gradually you can work up to more comprehensive writing but I think it’s best to start small.

One of the most sought after items on the internet is information. If people are hungry for information then satisfy their hunger.
